The days that I put an outgoing letter in my mailbox are some of my favorites. Why? Because I get to put the little red flag up to tell the mail carrier to pick up the mail. And when the mail carrier does pick up the mail, he or she puts the little red flag back down. It's not the little red flag that excites me. I almost always consider technology an improvement to my life. But sometimes it can be downright annoying. Take the Olympics for example. Because of the time difference between Indianapolis and Beijing, many of the events have already been completed before they air on the U.S. networks. 20 years ago, this wasn't a big deal. You just made sure you didn't watch the news so that you could pretend any event you were watching was actually live. Fast forward to 2008. Today, Michael Phelps was interviewed after one of the 200 meter freestyle heats. Three traits define my shopping habits: I almost always try to find what I am looking for online before I head out to a brick and mortar store. I hate waiting.
