The days that I put an outgoing letter in my mailbox are some of my favorites. Why? Because I get to put the little red flag up to tell the mail carrier to pick up the mail. And when the mail carrier does pick up the mail, he or she puts the little red flag back down. It's not the little red flag that excites me. I'm feeling rather important today. Maybe because I just received a letter in the mail from Verizon Wireless that started like this: Dear Patric Welch, You're a VIP. It's that simple. You've been automatically enrolled in the 2008 Verizon Wireless VIP Program* at no cost to you. There is nothing you need to except take advantage of all the exclusive benefits now available to you. I almost always consider technology an improvement to my life. But sometimes it can be downright annoying. Take the Olympics for example. Because of the time difference between Indianapolis and Beijing, many of the events have already been completed before they air on the U.S. networks. 20 years ago, this wasn't a big deal. You just made sure you didn't watch the news so that you could pretend any event you were watching was actually live. Fast forward to 2008. If you needed more proof that text messaging has become the primary communication medium for the next generation, just turn to the Olympics. Today, Michael Phelps was interviewed after one of the 200 meter freestyle heats. The interviewer asked him about the previous night when he was "unusually emotional" on the podium during the medal ceremony. 23 year old Michael Phelps replied that he had been through a lot during the last few years and that he was thinking about all of the text messages he received telling him, "we're rooting for you." Three traits define my shopping habits: I almost always try to find what I am looking for online before I head out to a brick and mortar store. I hate waiting. I hate waiting even more when at the end of the wait I find out what I want isn't in stock. These three traits basically sum up why I don't have a Wii Fit yet.
