Everybody loves an easy solution to their technology problems. Like this one. I received a call from a woman who told me that she had just moved into a new house. She went on to explain that she and her husband hooked up all of the components to their television in their new house but were seeing red streaks across the screen whenever they watched a DVD. She also mentioned that her satellite programming on her television looked just fine and did not have the same red streaks as the DVD player. I immediately had a gut feeling what the… Continue reading...

Redbox sent me a survey this morning asking me to rate their service on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best. I gave them an 8 only because I've recently discovered a few flaws with the Redbox service. Not enough for me to stop using Redbox, but enough for me to not give them a 10. Dear DISH Network: I am writing you to let you know that as a consumer I think Turbo HD is a horrible name. What exactly is turbo about your high definition programming? I almost always consider technology an improvement to my life. But sometimes it can be downright annoying. Take the Olympics for example. Because of the time difference between Indianapolis and Beijing, many of the events have already been completed before they air on the U.S. networks. 20 years ago, this wasn't a big deal. You just made sure you didn't watch the news so that you could pretend any event you were watching was actually live. Fast forward to 2008. In order to not get the results spoiled for any event I am interested in watching I have to ignore… Continue reading...

I did a double-take when I read my TiVo email newsletter today. I thought I was seeing things. It said you can now watch YouTube videos right from your TiVo. The newsletter included a screenshot of a familiar TiVo screen but with a new YouTube item. I didn't read another word of the newsletter. Instead I ran straight to my family room and brought up the TiVo menu. It was right around this time that I remembered that I had recently received the TiVo summer service upgrade on my TiVo HD DVR. I had read all of the highlights of… Continue reading...
