A poll that ran on the Noobie web site recently asked visitors what technology they would like help with the most. Choices ranged from digital, high definition television to digital cameras to iPods and MP3 players. Not surprisingly the one that generated the most interest was digital, high definition television. This is no doubt due to all of the public service ads that have been playing on television mentioning (or should I say warning about?) the switch to digital television on February 17, 2009. Most people by now realize a change is happening on this date. Unfortunately, many of those… Continue reading...

Noobie just closed a poll that had been running on our web site for the past month. The poll asked how many text messages you send each month. The majority of people who responded, 42.31%, indicated they send 0-10 text messages per month. My guess is the respondents are closer to 0 text messages per month than they are 10. After 12 years, I finally did it. I called today and canceled my service with DIRECTV. For those of you unfamiliar with my decision to do this, click here to read my previous post explaining why I decided to go old school with a pair of rabbit ears. So far so good. I have two widescreen televisions now pulling in all of the Indianapolis over-the-air (OTA) digital broadcasts (in stunning high definition when available). I also have a TiVo high definition digital video recorder (HD DVR) hooked up to each television so that I can record two shows in high… Continue reading...

I've been on my high horse for a while about companies trying to take advantage of consumers by selling them obsolete HD DVD players and movies. I've warned people to stay as far away as possible from HD DVD since it is now this decade's technology equivalent of the 1980s Betamax. Which is why today I tip my hat to a company called ThinkGeek. ThinkGeek sent out an email this morning advertising a Betamax to HD-DVD converter. Here's a few excerpts from the product description on ThinkGeek's web site: Here at ThinkGeek, we fully grok that digital convergence is all… Continue reading...
